- Rear facing infant only seats or convertible seats should be used for children who are 1 year or younger and weigh 20 lbs or less.
- Toddlers who have reached over 20 lbs and are over a year old should use forward facing car seats. These seats should be used until the child reaches 40 lbs or more.
- A belt positioning booster seat should be used for toddlers over 40 lbs.
- Infant only seats should use either a 3 or 5 point harness with an adjustable base.

The main types of children car seats include: infant, forward facing, convertible, and booster car seats.
- Infant seats – are rear facing car seats that are used by children 1 year and younger with an average weight of 20 lbs or less. They buckle your child up and keep them safe and secure with comfort and protection.
- Forward Facing seats – allows for your child to face in a forward position while driving. They are ideal for toddlers who are above 1 year of age and are over the 20 lb weight category.
- Convertible seats – these seats can be used in a forward and rear facing positions. You can start your newborn off in a rear facing position and as the baby grows you can convert the seat and place them in the forward facing position.
- Booster Seats – the next stage after the forward facing seat is the booster seat. There are two types belt-positioning and shield boosters. This model is good until your child reaches around 80 lbs.
